Can I Be Forgiven? In an out-of-the-way cemetery an unmarked tombstone bears the single word, Forgiven. A person can't help wondering, who was forgiven and by whom? What happened that caused someone to leave that message forever engraved upon his tombstone? The secret of that tombstone has long been buried. But one thing is certain, the need for forgiveness will always exist, since we all fail to live up to our word and others' expectations of us at one time or another. What is more serious is that we have failed to live up to what God expects of us! No one is able to perfectly keep God's commandments. The Bible states it simply, "all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). "Your iniquities [sins] have made a separation between you and your God" (Isaiah 59:2). Our disobedience separates us from our Creator. We need his forgiveness. But how can we know that God will forgive us? How could a perfectly just and righteous God overlook our sin? Our situation would be impossible if God had not settled the issue himself. He sent his Son--Jesus Christ--to earth to become a man, live a perfectly sinless life, and ultimately give his life for you and me. On the cross where Jesus died, he took the punishment for sin that we deserved. The Bible says God made Jesus to be sin for us, the One "who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God" (2 Corinthians 5:21). Then Jesus rose from the tomb and came back to life three days later and was seen by hundreds of people (1 Corinthians 15:3-6). Can I Be Sure? Because of what Jesus has accomplished, it is possible to know that God will forgive you and one day receive you into heaven (John 14:1-3). You can have the assurance of God's forgiveness by making the following choices: Recognize that your sins have separated you from God. In honest repentance agree with God about your sinfulness and admit your need for forgiveness: "If we confess our sins, he [God] is faithful and just to forgive us

Have you longed for a place of acceptance? People allowing you to be yourself? Forgiven is based on a network of women who have come together, asking little of each other, realizing the past has formed them but the future will release them from the secrets and mistakes. Ellen Anderson is the rock of faith, though her life will be shaken when her daughter is kidnapped. Beatrice, the widow, finds life goes on regardless of death or grief. Anne, divorced and alone, struggles full of fear, searching for peace and a way to reunite with her little boy. Harriet Becker has lived with a secret; she considers an unforgiven sin that has caused her to become a recluse from society. When the four women find their lives entwined rather than entangled, they find truth in the old saying, "Trouble shared is trouble halved." Ellen's faith becomes their creed. "Time may lead me nowhere, though I press on. My faith may break into pieces, but I know within my being, when I falter God is there." Will each woman find peace? Does God have a plan for their lives? Will the friendship, that wonderful network of caring, last when a little girl is kidnapped?

“If the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?”—1 Corinthians 14:8 THE volume now in the reader’s hands consists of a series of papers, systematically arranged, on the leading truths of Christianity which are “necessary to salvation.” Few, probably, will deny that there are some things in religion about which we may think other people hold very erroneous views, and are, notwithstanding, in no danger of being finally lost. About baptism and the Lord’s Supper,—about the Christian ministry,—about forms of prayer and modes of worship,—about the union of Church and State,—about all these things it is commonly admitted that people may differ widely, and yet be finally saved. No doubt there are always bigots and extreme partisans, who are ready to excommunicate every one who cannot pronounce their Shibboleth on the above-named points. But, speaking generally, to shut out of heaven all who disagree with us about these things, is to take up a position which most thoughtful Christians condemn as unscriptural, narrow; and uncharitable. On the ether hand, there are certain great truths of which some knowledge, by common consent, appears essential to salvation. Such truths are the immortality of the soul,—the sinfulness of human nature, the work of Christ for us as our Redeemer, the work of the Holy Ghost in us,—forgiveness, justification,—conversion,—faith,—repentance,—the marks of a right heart,—Christ’s invitations,—Christ’s intercession, and the like. If truths like these are not absolutely necessary to salvation, it is difficult to understand how any truths whatever can be called necessary. If people may be saved without knowing anything about these truths, it appears to me that we may throw away our Bibles altogether, and proclaim that the Christian religion is of no use. From such a miserable conclusion I hope most people will shrink back with horror. To open out and explain these great necessary
