Women s Voices and the Practice of Preaching Book Description :

Expert, practical help for women who preach or lead worship Many women preachers and worship leaders have trouble speaking; they struggle to fully use their physical voices. Maintaining that there is often a disconnect between the woman's self-understanding as a preacher and her own body, Nancy Lammers Gross presents not only techniques but also a theologically empowering paradigm shift to help women fully embody their God-given preaching vocations. Grounding her work in the biblical story of Miriam, Gross begins with a discussion of how women are instrumental in the work of God. She then tells stories, including her own, of women's experiences in losing connection to their bodies and their physical voices. Finally, Gross presents a constructive resolution with exercises for discovering and developing a full-body voice.

Why Do the Voices Want Me to Hurt Myself Book Description :

Nearly every day I hear people screaming and yelling at me to hurt myself or kill myself. They tell me that I have to die because I have Autism and they tell me that I am worthless and pathetic because I am Autistic. They yell at me and say I am never going to amount to anything and everyone hates me because I am autistic. They tell me time and time again throughout the day that in order for me to stay alive I must be neurotypical. The yelling is so loud and it scares me. When I am not around neurotypical people my age they yell louder and start hitting me. They tell me that I have to be neurotypical or they are going to come after me. I hear them when I am awake and sometimes when I am sleeping. There are 43 Voices I hear right now. They tell me that they will make it their life long goal to kill me because I am Autistic. When I try to run from them and hide they follow me. They usually follow me everywhere. The only time I can get a break from the voices is when I am around a neurotypical person my age or interacting with someone who is neurotypical my age. Today they were telling me to light myself on fire by pouring gasoline all over myself and lighting a match. The only way that I could not light a match and catch myself on fire was if I could get my friend to text me back. I knew that I was having a hallucination but the yelling just kept getting louder and louder. It starts with one person screaming and yelling and then another person takes their turn. Then the next person starts in. Sometimes all 43 voices are yelling at me and telling me that I need to hurt myself because I am autistic. I try so hard to remind myself that it is just a hallucination and it is not real. I try to talk to them and ask them to leave me alone but they just keep yelling. This is my life. This is what every day can be like. While there are times when I do not have psychotic episodes there are many times where I have a hard time functioning and a difficult time knowing what is real

The Principles of Ethical Youth Coaching Book Description :

Coaches: Would you like to coach your players in an ethical environment where you are developing the character of your players while sti ll being competi ti ve? Parents: Would you like your son or daughter coached in a safe environment where they will be able to develop life skills that will maximize their performance in areas outside of sports like educati on? The Principles of Ethical Youth Coaching provides the answers! The reality of sports is that very few athletes ever make it to the highest level of a given sport. Yet the training resources off ered to youth coaches focus almost exclusively on strategies to promote winning. The techniques advocated by these training programs may be acceptable for professional athletes; however, they are not acceptable for youth athletes. The overwhelming focus on winning causes coaches to miss opportuniti es to promote character development skills in their players. When, if at all, ethical player development skills are brought up in these programs, it is done so in passing and no concrete strategies are off ered. On the other hand, some well-intenti oned programs seek to eliminate winning from the equati on. This is not a realisti c approach, as winning is a fundamental aspect of sports and it must be embraced in the appropriate manner. The Principles of Ethical Youth Coaching shows coaches how to develop the character of their players while embracing the competi ti ve nature of sports.

Seeing Ghosts Book Description :

For readers of Helen Macdonald and Elizabeth Alexander, an intimate and haunting portrait of grief and the search for meaning from a singular new talent as told through the prism of three generations of her Chinese American family. Kat Chow has always been unusually fixated on death. She worried constantly about her parents dying---especially her mother. A vivacious and mischievous woman, Kat's mother made a morbid joke that would haunt her for years to come: when she died, she'd like to be stuffed and displayed in Kat's future apartment in order to always watch over her. After her mother dies unexpectedly from cancer, Kat, her sisters, and their father are plunged into a debilitating, lonely grief. With a distinct voice that is wry and heartfelt, Kat weaves together a story of the fallout of grief that follows her extended family as they emigrate from China and Hong Kong to Cuba and America. Seeing Ghosts asks what it means to reclaim and tell your family’s story: Is writing an exorcism or is it its own form of preservation? The result is an extraordinary new contribution to the literature of the American family, and a provocative and transformative meditation on who we become facing loss.

Trouble Talking Book Description :

The ability to speak is an important part of human interaction. In this book, a glimpse into the lived realities of 37 adults and 3 children with communication disorders whose humanism is somewhat compromised by their speech, language, or voice disorders is offered in humorous and heartbreaking detail. The patient’s struggle to communicate is often matched by their listeners, who are struggling to understand. Stories are presented of patients treated in medical settings for such problems as aphasia, dementia, Parkinson’s disease (PD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and other CNS diseases, apraxia, and head trauma. Other stories look at people who were treated in university clinics for such disorders as cerebral palsy and stuttering. The last few stories look at speech/voice treatment for a transgender woman, the loss of voice in a young man in a state penitentiary, and finally a humorous story of a pilot with left hemiplegia flying the author. Seasoned specialist Daniel Boone does not offer therapy suggestions for either the SLP or the patient’s family or friends to try. Rather, for anyone with a communication disorder, he strongly recommends that such patients should seek the guidance and therapy of an ASHA-certified speech-language pathologist (SLP). The SLP determines what to do in therapy and practice. The stories illustrate the struggles of those who cannot always make their listeners understand. They may only be able to repeat the same phrase over and over. They may not be able to articulate words clearly enough to be understood. They may give bizarre, confusing answers to everyday questions. Taken together, they also illustrate the difficulties listeners, those who wish to understand, have in trying to make heads or tails of the intended communication. Ultimately, this work provides a sensitive look at the various disorders people have, their attempts to overcome them, the treatments that might be available, and the actions listeners can take in ma

"Buff" Orpington arrived in picturesque Quanomet to find the little Cape Cod town in ferment. A stupendous pageant of American history was being staged, and the inhabitants of Quanomet had time and thought for nothing else. But all was not as it should be in the small community. There had been more curious incidents than could be attributed to the usual petty jealousies and maneuverings for the best parts and positions. Quanomet was, in fact, in its modest way about to make history, and Buff finds himself taking an uncomfortably prominent role when he discovers a newly made corpse in the cemetery. After too long an absence, Asey Mayo, the salty Cape Cod Sherlock, returns in fine form to solve the baffling murder in his own inimitable way.

Without Reserve Book Description :

Dorinda Vollmer has lived a life full of music, art, and poetry, which have sustained her in the happiest and the darkest of times. Her abiding passion has always been to live a life of purpose. With determination and courage, Dorinda often chose the more difficult path in life in favour of being true to herself. She answered the call to ministry in the United Church and chose to raise her son alone. The most difficult part of Dorinda’s journey was through her work as a minister, witnessing the struggle to survive faced by the people of the Roseau River Indian Reserve in Manitoba. Without Reserve offers a special perspective on the legacy of destructive historical and on-going government policies regarding First Nations people in Canada. It also unveils a lesson Dorinda learned along her journey: When the sky darkens, people search for light. In Without Reserve, the first part of Dorinda’s memoirs, those who find themselves at a crossroads will see that anything is possible. Her stories reflect a faith in the goodness of humanity and the ability of individuals to rise above personal suffering. Each person Dorinda has met throughout her life has deeply touched her heart and remains imbedded in her soul. In sharing her memoirs, Dorinda hopes the stories will touch people and empower them to empathize with those who struggle.
