AIDS up to the Year 2000 Book Description :

In March 1983 the Secretary of State for Welfare, Health and Cultural Affairs appointed the Steering Committee on Future Health Scenarios (STG). The task of the STG is to advise the Minister on the future of public health and health care in the long term in the Netherlands with a view to increasing the anticipatory capacity of government policy. Since 1983 the STG has set up a number of committees, including the Scenario Committee on AIDS, with a view to mapping out possible scenarios in their particular field of interest. The committees report in the form of scenario reports, which are of relevance not just to the national government but also to others involved in policy development and opinion formation in the field in question. What proportions will the HIV/AIDS epidemic assume and how many new HIV infections can be averted by HIV/AIDS prevention campaigns? How much care and support will people with HIV and AIDS need and what successes can be expected within the care sector? What will be the social consequences of AIDS and how can ostracism and the social isolation of people with HIV and AIDS be avoided? These and other related questions form the subject of this book, which examines the sociocultural and economic impact of AIDS in the Netherlands up to the year 2000. The book presents a study carried out by the Netherlands Institute of Mental Health (NcGv) and the National Institute of Public Health and Environmental Protection (RIVM), under the direction of the STG Scenario Committee on AIDS. The researchers look back at the epidemiological, sociocultural and economic impact of AIDS in the Netherlands during the first decade of the epidemic and, on the basis of this, use scenario analysis to project the impact of AIDS up to the year 2000. The future projections relate both to the impact of AIDS and the maximization of efforts to combat the disease. In addition to a scenario exploring the impact of AIDS if developments continue unchanged, alternative scenarios ar

Impact of the AIDS Crisis on South Africa s Prospects for Development Book Description :

"The association of the slow economic growth and development of a country on the one side, and the poor health of its people on the other side, is quite obvious. Formerly, the common sense was that low income in developing countries causes their bad condition concerning healthiness, but recent economic research increasingly considers the causal link between this two phenomena running the other way round. That is, poor health has a negative effect on per capita income, as it leads to lower labour productivity, lower investments in human capital and, by affecting the people's saving behaviour, in physical capital, and furthermore has an influence on the country's demography. The purpose of this paper is to identify the impact of the HIV/AIDS crisis on the South African economy and how this impact affects South Africa's economic growth and therefore its prospects for development. Economic impact "can be defined as that which causes the diversion of resources too uses that would not have been necessary in the absence of HIV/AIDS, and decreased production due to the disease". As this economic impact occurs through various channels, on different levels, it seems reasonable to approach the problem on these different levels, namely households, firms and business, and the macro economy."--p. 3.

AIDS Poverty and Hunger Book Description :

"The global AIDS epidemic has caused over 25 million deaths since 1981, and there is no end in sight. It is a multidimensional, phased, long-wave crisis with impacts that will be felt for decades to come. Attempts to defeat the epidemic are conventionally grounded in the three core pillars of AIDS policy: prevention, treatment and care, and mitigation. But there is also an urgent need for a deeper understanding of the integral role that food and nutrition can and should play, and a corresponding urgency to use that understanding to improve responses at all levels. The 18 essays in AIDS, Poverty, and Hunger: Challenges and Responses contribute to such an understanding by examining the impacts of HIV and AIDS on labor markets and wages, household income and consumption dynamics, and the agricultural sector as a whole; by studying the ways in which households respond to prime-age illness, death, and food insecurity; and by exploring the implications of local responses for the roles that national and international actors must play in addressing the AIDS-hunger nexus. This book creates an opportunity for development professionals to build the conceptual links lacking in current multisectoral frameworks, assess impacts and costs, propose indicators and monitoring systems, and design appropriate food- and nutrition-related interventions and policies."

The Political Economy of AIDS in Africa Book Description :

Sub-Saharan Africa is a region devastated by HIV/AIDS. The extent of the epidemic is only now becoming clear, as increasing numbers of people with HIV are becoming ill. In the absence of massively expanded prevention, treatment and care efforts, the AIDS death toll on the continent is set to escalate rapidly. Despite progress being achieved in localized settings, the alarming statistics reflect the continuing failure of advanced countries to mount a response that matches the scale and severity of the African HIV/AIDS crisis. Over and above the colossal personal suffering, the dire social and economic consequences for fragile nation-states are already being felt, not only in health but in education, industry, agriculture, transport, human resources and economies in general. Countries already crippled by drought, poverty, debt, forced migration and civil war must now contend with massive deterioration in child survival rates and life expectancy, the erosion of the economic family base, massive and insupportable demands on health and public services, chronic labour shortages and volatile national security. Through a critical and detailed exploration of specific case studies, this invaluable volume brings together an unparalleled array of international contributors to redefine the political and economic contours of this calamitous epidemic. It examines the impact of the shortfalls in the 'Global Fund' allocation, the slow pace of administrative processing of aid and the weaknesses of institutional responses to the crisis from African countries and their partners in the global health community. It is essential reading for all concerned with public health, epidemiology, HIV/AIDS research, globalization, development, Africa and indeed our shared future. Features include: ” Unique assessments of HIV/AIDS and its impact on democracy and governance in African states ” Wide-ranging regional and country studies by the foremost thinkers in their fields ” Multi-disciplinary

HIV AIDS and Work Book Description :

It is estimated that by the end of 2003 there were just under 38 million people living with HIV/AIDS, with all but two million of these people of working age. This report, prepared by the ILO Programme on HIV/AIDS and the World of Work, sets out global estimates of the impact of HIV/AIDS on the labour force and the working age population in 50 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean and in more developed regions. Issues discussed include: the implications for the private and public sectors, on agriculture and concerns for food insecurity and on the informal economy; on women and children; policy implications and examples of responses to the problem in a variety of workplace settings; provision of antiretroviral therapy in conjunction with HIV prevention in the workplace and the potential for expanded access to workplace-based treatment.

Impacts and Interventions Book Description :

This book draws together the latest statistics and analyses on the impacts of the HIV/AIDS epidemic on the children of South Africa and provides a comprehensive discussion of current interventions and their effectiveness to address the situation. The epidemic is and will continue to have a devastating impact upon all of South African society. Over 5 million citizens are infected. One vulnerable group in South African society who will be harmed by the epidemic is children. About 18 million children live in South Africa. These least powerful members of our society will experience parental loss, household upheaval, increased poverty and, for those unfortunate enough to be infected themselves, death as a result of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. By 2010, South Africa will have almost 3 million orphans as a result of the epidemic. This book has three main aims. One is to analyze the impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic upon the children of South Africa, with a focus on health, welfare and education. Another is to examine the responses of families, communities, civil society and especially governments to the crisis confronting the children. Impacts and Interventions critiques those responses and offers alternatives which may assist in ameliorating the impacts on children.
