The units are developmentally appropriate for all early learners. They are standards based and Creative Curriculum friendly. Carousel Curriculum has been used successfully with young learners including English language learners, children with special needs and diverse learning styles as well as homeschoolers. I am a teacher with 35 years of teaching experience in the areas of early childhood education and early childhood special education. Principals and co-workers always expressed an interest in my thematic units. This planted the bug for me to write down and market what I have used successfully for so many years. The curriculum was created through years of education, experience, trial and error, revisions, and updating. Each unit covers a span of 4-6 weeks. A previously unknown species of seahorse is discovered by oceanologist Drew Boone and his daughter, Karissa, in the small New England town of Seaside Cove. Karissa has been withdrawn and troubled since her parents' divorce, and is spending the summer with her father. Karissa becomes the first kid to make contact with Star, a sea creature that is a unique hybrid of seahorse and normal horse. Her father believes Star is the result of seismic activity near an offshore oil drilling platform. Karissa is brought out of her shell by her friendship with Star and becomes the envy of the other children. Before long, other seahorses join Star on land, coming from an underwater passage at Seahorse Cove. All the kids claim their own seahorse as a family pet. One day, Martin Thompson, owner of the local offshore drilling site, sees a child riding his seahorse in the ocean. Thompson tracks down all the seahorses, confiscating them as his own property. He puts the seahorses in glass tanks and plans to open a theme park. The children are heartbroken as are the seahorses. Karissa organizes a peaceful protest of the theme park. Growing up in Walltown, Italy presents an ethnographic account of the culture of early childhood education, as it is constructed in two municipal schools (a nursery and a childhood school) of an Italian town, explored through extensive participant observation and interviews of educators, teachers, school coordinators, mothers, and cooks and school staff. After providing background information on Italian early childhood education, the author describes and interprets the process of children's insertion into the world of the school as a "passage" whose ritual steps—initially accompanied by a parent—are carefully prepared by educators and teachers, so that the "passengers" will successfully settle in, and become competent members and participants of the respective educational communities.
