The Yoga Sutras Of Patanjali Book Description :

The basic questions of Who Am I? Where Am I Going? What Is the Purpose of Life? are asked by every generation, and Patanjali's answers (given in the third century BC) form one of the oldest spiritual texts in the world. 'That which unites' is called 'Yoga' - and is thus much broader than the form of exercise so popular today. It is a way to restore our lost wholeness, our integrity as complete human beings, by unifying the personality around a centre that is silent and unbounded. Alistair Shearer's superb introduction and translation bring these ancient, vital teachings to life in the modern world and are for all those who seek the benefits of self-knowledge.

Patanjali Yoga Sutras Book Description :

This is a scriptural commentary of Lahiri Mahasaya on Patanjali Yoga Sutras in the Light of Kriya. All living beings are subject to the law of cause and effect. As a result oftheir past actions, they suffer again and again without breaking the cycle of birthsand deaths. Desires cause them to embody and reembody in the world. Once in embodiment, the individual seeks happiness and avoids pain andsorrow. Pleasure and/or pain is reaped in this life according to past good and badactions. Moreover, in order to be happy in this world, one should also suffer becausehappiness and suffering are relative. There is no escape from suffering until alldesires themselves are dissolved, or transcended. Perfect Happiness can only be found in Peace, or Shanti. How can one find Peace? There is no other means for finding Peace except through the practice ofYoga. By the practice of Yoga, the tremendously restless heart becomes calm. Notonly does the heart become calm by Yoga practice, but longevity is also increased. The body becomes healthy, and absolute Knowledge is gained. Who can tell how long a man will remain alive? It is well known that even ordinary people, without mentioning Yogis, canlive up to one-hundred to one-hundred-fifty years. It is also admitted that, startingwith the body in the mother’s womb up to the age of eighty, individuals are facedwith premature death. What is the cause of premature death? How can one prevent it? Who is also lucky not to be afflicted with hereditary ill-health or prematuredeath? Individuals themselves are the cause of their own death. It will become clearwhen one analyzes the nature of his restless activities and desires in search ofHappiness. What could be more desirable than to enjoy Peace with a steadfast heart? It In not so easy to remain steadfastly calm no matter what happens in life. But why in this not possible? Where is one's command over the mind? One shall have to tactically acquire dominion over the mind. That can onlybe accomplished

Patanjali Yoga Sutras Book Description :

Composed over two millenniums ago, the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali remains the philosophical thread that unites the ancient and current world of yoga. Yet, its many translations are underwhelming, lacking connection to reality and practicality. Innumerable forms and sects of yoga have come and gone in between. Obsessed with gaining special powers over mind and body, yoga’s re-tellers have clouded its history in a mystical mist of fantastic claims. It is human nature to crave powers to radically change our lot in life. These layers of dazzle and glitter have over the centuries led us further away from yoga’s spiritual core. The sutras’ clear, logical, and practical path has been blurred and lost. Radically breaking with this mystical tradition, A. K. Aruna seeks to reclaim for us this fountainhead of yoga by retying the understanding of these sutras to the even more ancient source of spiritual knowledge and yoga—the Upanishads. The Upanishads eschewed limited pursuits in order to seek an ultimate goal that was not time-bound. In this still pure form of the yoga of seeking ultimate, timeless truth, the words of Patanjali become crystal clear and practical. Yoga shines in timeless relevance. A. K. Aruna’s Patanjali Yoga Sutras: A Translation in the Light of Vedanta Scripture has brilliantly refocused the light on the Yoga Sutras. This is a companion, translation only, booklet to the Translation and Commentary version of the text by A. K. Aruna.

Yoga Sutras of Patanjali Book Description :

The Volume one of the Commentary on the Yoga-Sutras of Patanjali (samadhi-pada) was published in 1984 and is available from the HImalayan International Institute of Yoga Science and Philosophy, Route I, Box 400, Honesdale, PA 18431, USA. It was highly acclaimed as a work of rare authenticity, based on thirteen Sanskrit commentaries, synthesized and studied in the light of the oral tradition and direct personal experience in the master-disciple lineage of the yogis. The author is of the opinion that without such personal experience much of the terminology of the Yoga-sutras would remain obscure and any explanation of purely scholastic grounds would be incomplete. The value of the present volume on the Sadhana-pada is further enhanced by adding the study of even more published Sanskrit commentaries as well as unpublished manuscripts. Seven lengthy appendices add to the value of the work as the material presented in these appendices can be further researched and enhanced to form into independent theses. The author makes certain that the works of the previous commentators be examined in the light of how the Sutras are taught in the Himalayan caves among those who practice the various methods and are initiated into them.

Yoga Sutras of Patanjali Book Description :

This is an English rendering of the classical text on yoga and meditations that maintains the poetic forms of the sutras. Patanjali is to Yoga what Buddha is to Buddhism. His sutras-scriptural narratives sometimes defined as literally "the path to transcendence"- are a darshan, or philosophical worldview and method to aid the awakening of self-realization. Patanjali reveals a set of landmarks that enable practitioners to lift the veils and study the hidden self, eventually following this path to enlightenment.

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali Book Description :

A landmark new translation and edition Written almost two millennia ago, Patañjali's work focuses on how to attain the direct experience and realization of the purusa: the innermost individual self, or soul. As the classical treatise on the Hindu understanding of mind and consciousness and on the technique of meditation, it has exerted immense influence over the religious practices of Hinduism in India and, more recently, in the West. Edwin F. Bryant's translation is clear, direct, and exact. Each sutra is presented as Sanskrit text, transliteration, and precise English translation, and is followed by Bryant's authoritative commentary, which is grounded in the classical understanding of yoga and conveys the meaning and depth of the su-tras in a user-friendly manner for a Western readership without compromising scholarly rigor or traditional authenticity. In addition, Bryant presents insights drawn from the primary traditional commentaries on the sutras written over the last millennium and a half.

The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali Book Description :

In just 196 short aphorisms, this classic work of Indian philosophy spells out succinctly how the mind works, and how it is possible to use the mind to attain liberation. Compiled in the second or third century CE, the Yoga-Sutra is a road map of human consciousness—and a particularly helpful guide to the mind states one encounters in meditation, yoga, and other spiritual practices. It expresses the truths of the human condition with great eloquence: how we know what we know, why we suffer, and how we can discover the way out of suffering. Chip Hartranft's fresh translation and extensive, lucid commentary bring the text beautifully to life. He also provides useful auxiliary materials, including an afterword on the legacy of the Yoga-Sutra and its relevance for us today.

Yoga Sutras Book Description :

The Yoga Sutras were compiled about 2,000 years ago by the sage Patanjali from an oral tradition reaching back into unknowable antiquity. He gives us the essential wisdom for the practice of yoga and meditation to know, first hand, the essence of our true Self-the conscious indweller that enlivens this body. Experiencing the fully conscious state shows us the essential transcendent nature of the universe to bring us a state of undisturbed joyous tranquillity. Traditionally, this wisdom has been handed down from master to student as a transmission of the means to liberation. Patanjali tells us that the pure blissful inner Self is already attained and all that is required is to lose interest in that which is not the Self. This is pretty straight forward, and we learn all we need to know in the first three sutras. Presuming we will not get it the first time, he goes on to detail the nature of the Self, the practices that will awaken us, the attainments that arise from the practices and then explains about the state of final liberation. Throughout the book we are reminded of two fundamental practices that lead to the final state, kaivalya. One practice is vairagya (dispassion, non-attachment) and the other is viveka (discrimination). In the practice of viveka, we learn to discriminate between the mind and the watcher of the mind (consciousness itself). When we can rest in the state of consciousness knowing itself; we answer the question, "Who am I?" Also available from this author: The Inner Yoga of Happiness

The Yoga Sutras Of Patanjali Book Description :

There are many spiritually elevated people in the world, but not many levitating yogis: and The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are meant to elevate the spirit of every man, not to teach him how to levitate. This is clearly the gospel of enlightened living, neigher an escape from life nor a hallucinatory 'light'. The attempt in this little book has been to expose that gospel, to avoid technicalities, and to relate the whole yoga philosophy to the ordinary and simple daily life of everyone. There are many excellent translations of the Sutras: this, however, is an interpretative translation. There are several scholarly and erudite commentaries, too: this is definitely not one of them. This book is not meant for the research scholar but for one who is in search of truth which shall free him from self-ignorance.
