Five chapters have the following themes: (1) begining to explore a special place in nature; (2) ways to become familiar with animals and plants that live in the area; (3) receptivity to nature; (4) ways to preserve and care for the site and to share its special features with a friend; and (5) personal reflection during an evening/morning or overnight visit to the site. The book is written as if a young person is doing the activities alone, however the activities and stories can be used with groups. “Catholicism takes a path less traveled in leading us to explore the faith through stories, biographies, and images.”—Timothy M. Dolan, Archbishop of New York What is Catholicism? A 2,000-year-old living tradition? A worldview? A way of life? A relationship? A mystery? In Catholicism Father Robert Barron examines all these questions and more, seeking to capture the body, heart and mind of the Catholic faith. Starting from the essential foundation of Jesus Christ’s incarnation, life, and teaching, Father Barron moves through the defining elements of Catholicism--from sacraments, worship, and prayer, to Mary, the Apostles, and Saints, to grace, salvation, heaven, and hell. Whether discussing Scripture or the rose window at Notre Dame, he uses his distinct and dynamic grasp of art, literature, architecture, personal stories, theology, philosophy, and history to present the Church to the world. Paired with his documentary film series of the same title, Catholicism is an intimate journey, capturing “The Catholic Thing” in all its depth and beauty. Eclectic, unique, and inspiring, Father Barron brings the faith to life for a new generation, in a style that is both faithful to timeless truths, while simultaneously speaking in the language of contemporary life.
How could she have known, sitting behind that red-headed boy in a fifth-grade Oregon classroom, she’d follow him into the heart of Africa? It was a wild journey of faith, thrusting her into the Pokot people’s lives in a remote corner of Kenya. In Into Africa, author Jane Hamilton tells their story offering a look at the everyday life of a bush missionary. For Dick and Jane Hamilton, entering the “culturally protected” area of Kara Pokot, Kenya, in 1974, is like falling through time. The warrior people, living a centuries-old lifestyle of cattle herding and tribal warfare, struggle for survival. The wells drilled by the British during colonial times are long broken. The strange white man begins to repair broken wells, opening the way into the Pokot community and a forty-year ministry with this tribe. Years of tribal conflict, famines, and bush living pale to the challenge of a government suspicious of Americans living among the only tribe in Kenya that have refused to disarm. A shipment of well drilling equipment arrives at Mombasa Port; harmless pellet guns are mistaken for illegal arms. Missionaries are arrested for gun running, and an American well driller dies in police custody, bringing a million-dollar water project to the edge of failure. The ultimate survival of the Rift Valley Water Project brings water to thousands, enabling the establishment of schools, clinics, and churches. Into Africa chronicles that journey with spiritual truths woven into the stories of life in the African bush.
This “astonishing and deeply poignant” (The Washington Post) memoir of one man’s search for a beloved family friend explores the depth of Iranian culture and the sweep of its history, and transcends today’s news headlines to remind us of the humanity that connects us all. Growing up in Tehran in the 1960s, Terence Ward and his brothers were watched over by Hassan, the family’s cook, housekeeper, and cultural guide. After an absence of thirty years and much turmoil in Iran, Ward embarks on a quixotic pilgrimage with his family in search of their lost friend. However, as they set out on this improbable quest with no address or phone number, their only hope lies in their mother’s small black and white photograph taken decades before. Crossing the vast landscape of ancient Persia, Ward interweaves its incredibly rich past, while exploring modern Iran’s deep conflicts with its Arab neighbors and our current administration. Searching for Hassan puts a human face on the long-suffering people of the Middle East with this inspirational story of an American family who came to love and admire Iran and its culture through their deep affection for its people. The journey answers the question, “How far would you go for a friend?” Including a revised preface and epilogue, this new and updated edition continues to demonstrate that Searching for Hassan is as relevant and timely as ever in shaping conversations and ways of thinking about different cultures both in the US and around the world.

When I escaped from the communist sector of East Germany to the free society of West Germany in the year of 1955 and then to the USA when I turned 21, I was convinced that I was free. Little did I know that it was just the beginning of my Journey to Freedom. It took many years of self-search, sparked by a quote from William Shakespeare, "Of all the knowledgeable, the wise and good seek most to know themselves," that helped me recognize the difference between apparent freedom in a society and invisible chains of bondage within our own selves.I realized, true FREEDOM is a JOURNEY OF THE HEART. Coming to this awareness began with reflecting on my path that led from a childhood filled with fear, anger and mistrust, to greater understanding inspired by sages and authors who had traveled along similar uncertain roads. My background was one of abandonment and then living with various foster parents. While I was taught reading, writing and arithmetic at school, my life was devoid of learning about the world through books, newspapers and magazines. What I believe is that we are all created from the same source of Divine Intelligent Spirit. I am so grateful that I have learned enough of the language to share with you just a small part of my story. Now that I am in my eighties, and have years behind me filled with tears and laughter, joy and pain, songs and music, learning about Grace, I am inspired to share what I have learned about resilience, and that hope builds on faith and the feeling of forgiveness.I challenge you to search for that heartfelt Freedom, a new and higher Consciousness.
