Heredity and Environment Book Description :

"This book is a critical survey of the methods and findings of nature and nurture research. It appraises recent studies of foster children, including studies of twins reared apart, which attacked the problem of the influence of heredity and environmental factors in intelligence and achievement. The author has analyzed with his characteristic scientific objectivity and clarity of expression the research results already achieved. He has indicated that these studies are in substantial agreement as to the indispensability of both genetic and environmental factors in mental development and has suggested further research necessary to obtain valid conclusions concerning unsolved crucial problems. He also calls attention to the importance in future studies of integrating the points of view and the methods of research from the fields of anthropology, genetics, psychology, and sociology. His analysis, it is hoped, will stimulate research that will take full account of the deficiencies and shortcomings of past studies as well as of their positive contributions to methodology. This book will be helpful not only to those engaged in research on twins and foster children but also to all interested in the role of the genetic and environmental factors in human behavior." Intelligence Book Description :

The concept and measurement of intelligence present a curious paradox. On the one hand, scientists, fluent in the complex statistics of intelligence-testing theories, devote their lives to exploration of cognitive abilities. On the other hand, the media, and inexpert, cross-disciplinary scientists decry the effort as socially divisive and useless in practice. In the past decade, our understanding of testing has radically changed. Better selected samples have extended evidence on the role of heredity and environment in intelligence. There is new evidence on biology and behavior. Advances in molecular genetics have enabled us to discover DMA markers which can identify and isolate a gene for simple genetic traits, paving the way for the study of multiple gene traits, such as intelligence. Hans Eysenck believes these recent developments approximate a general paradigm which could form the basis for future research. He explores the many special abilitiesverbal, numerical, visuo-spatial memorythat contribute to our cognitive behavior. He examines pathbreaking work on "multiple" intelligence, and the notion of "social" or "practical" intelligence and considers whether these new ideas have any scientific meaning. Eysenck also includes a study of creativity and intuitionas well as the production of works of art and scienceidentifying special factors that interact with general intelligence to produce predictable effects in the actual world. The work that Hans Eysenck has put together over the last fifty years in research into individual differences constitutes most of what anyone means by the structure and biological basis of personality and intelligence. A giant in the field of psychology, Eysenck almost single-handedly restructured and reordered his profession. Intelligence is Eysenck's final book and the third in a series of his works from Transaction.

Environmental Effects on Cognitive Abilities Book Description :

It sometimes seems that it is difficult to pick up a current newspaper or a magazine without it containing a story about some behavioral characteristic for which it has been found that a gene is responsible. Even aspects of behavior that one would feel certain are environmentally controlled are now being attributed in part to the effects of the genes. But genes never act alone: Their effects are always filtered through the environment. The goal of this volume is to discuss how the environment influences the development and the maintenance of cognitive abilities. It is a successor to the editors' 1997 volume, Intelligence, Heredity, and Environment, and a companion to their new volume, Family Environment and Intellectual Functioning: A Life-Span Perspective. Taken together, the two-volume set comprises the most comprehensive existing work on the relation between the environment and cognitive abilities. Psychologists, parents, social workers, educators, and employers are all likely to find this book of interest.

Intelligence Intuition and Creativity Book Description :

Definition of intelligence in the Global Cognitive Theory. PDF book about types of intelligence and characteristics of intuition, language and creativity. Nature vs. nurture or heredity and environment in intelligence. The following heading of the Global Cognitive Theory is dedicated to the various concepts of intelligence and elegant intelligence as a knowledge manager: I have tried to define the different forms of its internal workings from the preconcepts and automatic responses to the responses generated by logic and the system of language. The organization criterion chosen is the degree of reliability associated with the response of intelligence when its system faces a problem or requirement. An approach to creativity, in the sense of creativity being formed by complex functions or packets of basic functions of intelligence that support certain complex abilities of the brain. The next step is to speculate on the physiological structure that is most apt to execute the required functions, its genetic nature and, as a consequence, the way in which intelligence is transmitted to following generations. The coherence of the proposals needs an additional element, evolutionary psychology or the way in which intelligence grows and develops. It seems slightly complicated that it develops and improves its efficiency through random mutations.
