Inescapable Histories Book Description :

To the overwhelming task of creating an art for social change that is both art and social in the strongest senses, Mel Chin brings a panoply of talents. This book presents a body of Chin's work, selected to provide insight into his research and working methods. It focuses on drawings, multiples, maquettes, and small sculptures he has created in the last 20 years, offering an intimate look at some of the smaller works and developmental sketches for large works. Born in Houston of parents who emigrated from China, Chin's early childhood was spent in African American and Latino neighborhoods while he absorbed Chinese philosophy and culture at home. His multicultural upbringing and expansive world view are reflected in subjects addressed in his works that range from ancient cosmology and mythology to contemporary international violations of human rights and scientific experiments in the reclamation of the industrial wasteland.

Chin-tao Wu offers a provocative contribution to the debate on public culture in Britain and America as she details the various ways in which business values and the free-market ethos have come to permeate the sphere of the visual arts since the 1980s. From Absolut Vodka's sponsorship of student art shows to BMW's logo on the banners advertising major art exhibitions, corporate sponsorship and business involvement in the visual arts have become increasingly common features of our cultural lives. Chin-tao Wu's book is the first concerted attempt to detail the various ways in which business values and the free-market ethos have come to permeate the sphere of the visual arts since the 1980s.It analyzes the role of government in injecting the principles of the free market into public arts agenciesin particular the Arts Council in Great Britain and the National Endowment for the Arts in the USA. It looks at the corporate take-over of art museums, highlighting the ways in which cultural capital can thereby be garnered by business elites; and it considers the ways in which corporations have succeeded in integrating themselves into the infrastructure of the art world itself by showcasing contemporary art in their own corporate premises.

Rather than narrating late ancient history based on facts defensible in modern historical terms, these essays attempt to create histories based on what are now considered late ancient fictions, the now-discarded paradigms of late ancient thought"--Provided by publisher.

The Japanese Chin Book Description :

The Japanese Chin is a breed of toy dog that originates from China. The breed is commonly known as the 'Japanese Spaniel,' and was highly popular with Japanese nobility - hence why the breed's name alludes to the 'Japanese.' It is believed that the Japanese Chin breed could have originated in around 732 AD! However, other records indicate that the Japanese Chin probably would have come into existence during the mid-6th century as this is when the breed was gifted to a Japanese Empress. Within Japanese culture dogs are mainly viewed as working or helper animals. This makes the Japanese Chin unique as the breed was developed for the purpose of companionship. Traditionally the ownership of a Japanese Chin was restricted to only Japanese nobility and royalty. Each group of nobles or royals bred the Japanese Chin to their own standard which has resulted in the Japanese Chin breed being high varied: differences in size, body type, eye set and coat density are common. Generally speaking, the Japanese Chin has a single overcoat that grows to a medium-long length. The breed's coat is commonly colored black and white, or red and white. The Japanese Chin is known for its unique state of permanent Strabismus of the eyes (cross eye). The temperament of dogs is normally affected by the following factors: individual personality, heredity, training and socialization. It is therefore important to make sure that you meet the puppy's mother before purchasing a Japanese Chin. It is also important to make sure to thoroughly socialize your Japanese Chin with strangers, children and other animals during its puppyhood. Generally speaking, the Japanese Chin is an alert, independent and intelligent breed. The Japanese Chin's temperament has been related to that of a cat, as it uses its paws to clean its face, enjoys resting on high surfaces, have a good sense of stability and is highly independent. The breed also is known to be incredibly loyal and affectionate towards its owners and family
