The Technics of Bel Canto 1905 Book Description :

"Die Technik des Bel Canto" (1905) As the last of the great master-teachers of the 'old Italian school' of singing, Giovanni Battista Lamperti taught his students virtuosic vocal techniques handed down from the great castrati of the 17th century: exquisitely rich chiaroscuro tone, seamless flowing legato phrasing, undetectable passaggi register transitions and the delicately poised appoggio breath technique that allowed the astonishingly rapid coloratura typical of baroque music. In the only treatise he ever wrote, Lamperti the younger shares with all students, teachers and enthusiasts of singing, the techniques and skills that made his students that greatest singers of their time: the arcane secrets of bel canto.

Giovanni Battista Rubini and the Bel Canto Tenors Book Description :

Giovanni Battista Rubini (1794-1854) was a legendary tenor and the first 19th-century non-castrati male singer to become an international star of opera. The previous two centuries had been the era of the castrati, with tenors and basses relegated to character and supporting roles in the operas of their time. Rubini stood apart because he not only matched the castrati in coloratura and pathos, but he also had an extraordinarily high voice. With Rubini’s rise, and in his wake, several tenors came to sing roles written specifically for them by Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, and many other lesser-known bel canto composers. Signaling the end of the dominance of castrati on stage, this period would last some 40 years until the advent of Grand Opera, Wagner, and Verdi and the appearance of the first so-called High C from the chest by Gilbert-Louis Duprez in 1837. Since then, the accepted tenor sound has followed the tradition epitomized by Enrico Caruso and, in our own era, Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo. Many composers, conductor, and performers would come to regard bel canto dramatic operas as decorative and vapid until Maria Callas and Tulio Serafin demonstrated the heights this genre of opera could reach. However, opera directors and opera performers of late who have expressed an interest in reviving selected masterpieces from the bel canto tradition have found themselves confronted with the problem of locating tenors versed in the vocal techniques necessary to carry the high tessituras. In Giovanni Battista Rubini and the Bel Canto Tenors: History and Technique, Dan H. Marek explores the extraordinary life of Rubini in order to frame this special period in the history of opera and connect the technique of the castrati who were among Rubini’s instructors. Drawing on the work of Berton Coffin, Marek offers long-sought answers to the challenges presented by high tessitura of bel canto operas for tenors. To further assist working singers, Giovanni Battista Rubini

First published in 1999, this biography from David Tunley draws on newly researched documentary evidence to chart Campoli’s early success and his later struggle for recognition as a serious artist. Campoli’s early success and his later struggle for recognition as a serious artist. Campoli’s career emerges as one particularly shaped and directed by the great economic and social forces of the first half of the century, and the story here is as much that of his times, as of his life. Described by Szigeti as ‘one of the last great individualists among violinists’, Alfredo Campoli was a household name in the field of British light music prior to the Second World War. Having made his début at the Wigmore Hall in 1923 Campoli toured with Melba and Butt, then turned to light music during the Depression. He became one of Decca’s early recording artists and broadcast frequently for the BBC with his light music ensembles and pursued a long, successful career as a distinguished international performer.

Bel Canto Book Description :

This guide somatically explains how to sing using fundamental 'bel canto' technique. It is unique because it explains the physical technique of 'bel canto' in plain words, rather than discussing opinions and observations, style, vocalises, history and theory. The author, Kendrick Jacocks, has used the method, which was identified as 'bel canto' by professionals in the field as he prepared for his debut performances of Verdi's "Otello' with the Donetsk State Opera in The Ukraine and on tour in Spain. His performances held interest for his unique ability to transmit real emotion through the use of timbre, intensity, and dynamics, which was enabled by three essential physical movements. The 'bel canto position' was taught to him by the successful 'bel canto' teacher and soprano Virginia Zeani. The technique was then applied by the actions he sets forth in this book, and aided by his own studies and practice. The second half of the book provides helpful remedies, suggested listening, a short explanation of the teachings of Manuel Garcia II, Enrico delle Sedie, Mathilde Marchesi, and Giovanni Sbriglia, "Constantin Stanislavsky on Singing in the Mask," quotations on the value of humming and suggestions from Zinka Milanov, Virginia Zeani, Marian Anderson, G. B. Lamperti, Jean de Reszke, and Rosa Ponselle, and a short gallery.
