NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The heart-wrenching, uplifting tale about a woman named Cupcake “[Cupcake] Brown’s confessional . . . memoir is one you can’t easily put down. Her life is nothing short of a miracle.”—Chicago Sun-Times There are shelves of memoirs about overcoming the death of a parent, childhood abuse, rape, drug addiction, miscarriage, alcoholism, hustling, gangbanging, near-death injuries, drug dealing, prostitution, and homelessness. Cupcake Brown survived all these things before she’d even turned twenty. And that’s when things got interesting. . . Orphaned by the death of her mother and left in the hands of a sadistic foster parent, young Cupcake Brown learned to survive by turning tricks, downing hard liquor, and ingesting every drug she could find while hitchhiking up and down the California coast. She stumbled into gangbanging, drug dealing, hustling, prostitution, theft, and, eventually, the best scam of all: a series of 9-to-5 jobs. A Piece of Cake is unlike any memoir you’ll ever read. Moving in its frankness, this is the most satisfying, startlingly funny, and genuinely affecting tour through hell you’ll ever take. Praise for A Piece of Cake “[Brown] reflects now with insight and honesty on her experiences. . . . An engaging account . . . of a remarkable life filled with pain and wisdom, hope and redemption.”—San Fracisco Chronicle “Dazzles you with the amazing change that is possible in one lifetime.”—Washington Post

A Piece of Cake is a short, gripping story of life in wartime from Roald Dahl, the master of the shocking tale. In A Piece of Cake, Roald Dahl, one of the world's favourite authors, tells the horrific story of a pilot whose plane crashes in the desert. A Piece of Cake is taken from the short story collection Over to You, which includes nine other dramatic and terrifying tales of life as a wartime fighter pilot, and is drawn from Dahl's own experiences during the Second World War. This story is also available as a Penguin digital audio download read by Julian Rhind-Tutt. Roald Dahl, the brilliant and worldwide acclaimed author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, Matilda, and many more classics for children, also wrote scores of short stories for adults. These delightfully disturbing tales have often been filmed and were most recently the inspiration for the West End play, Roald Dahl's Twisted Tales by Jeremy Dyson. Bernadette Mayer and Lewis Warsh wrote Piece of Cake as a work of collaborative prose poetry, based on a process of each writing on alternate days in the course of August of 1976 - the bicentennial year of America's Declaration of Independence. It recounts the quotidian details of daily activities, negotiating the exigencies of young, married-with-children life, the artistic path and citizenship. It has the classic "I did this, I did that" of a New York School of Poetry text, as characterized by the poetry of Frank O'Hara, and is somewhat reminiscent of Mayer's work Memory, written not long before taking up Piece of Cake, and a forerunner to Midwinter Day, also written in Lenox, Massachusetts. Another distinguishing feature of this work is that it is arguably the first significant male-female collaboration in 20th-century American poetry. Regarding the possible derivation of the work's title, and exemplary of the work's tenor, is the start of Warsh's entry of August 29: "I also recall getting up and eating a piece of left-over cake (a very sweet store-bought cake with green or possibly pinkish icing) and drinking a glass of milk at the kitchen window. Empty streets, no moon. Michael and Twinkie asleep on the floor of Bernadette's room, Guy and Karen in mine, Bill on the couch in the living room. Marie in her crib. Everyone 'dead to the world,' a phrase I dislike, what a full house."

Sixty-six-year-old Roger Kohler was heading for a heart attack, and he didn’t know it. During an annual exam, he mentioned to his doctor that he was feeling tired after his walks on the beaches of Cape Cod with his wife, Adele, and their golden retriever, Bella. His family practitioner arranged an appointment with a cardiologist, and Kohler received some important news: He needed open-heart surgery, and soon. In A Piece of Cake, Kohler narrates the story of his experience dealing with heart disease—from his initial diagnosis through his heart surgery and his recovery. He shares the details of how he felt before and after the surgery. An inspirational story, A Piece of Cake draws attention to the number one killer today in America, where an estimated 1.1 million will have a heart attack this year—and one-third of them will die. Like Kohler, many never show prior symptoms of heart disease. Kohler’s personal experiences provide insight into the impact heart disease has on human lives.
